You are only able to make a first impression once and it is important it is a good one. Buyers can be meticulous, and how your home looks is only a part of what they look at.

Buyers are potentially spending a lot of money on your home. You want to do everything in your power to make them feel comfortable and welcome in your home. Let them get a feel for what it would be like to live there. It helps to keep your home clean and tidy.

Remember, it is better to hear how great your home looks, rather than how great it would look with a little work.

Some suggestions for making that first impression are as follows:

  • The outside of your home is their first impression. Make sure flower beds are groomed; lawn mowed, trees trimmed, and clutter free steps and porches. Flowers are a great touch also.

  • Clean up clutter in home, off counter tops, closets, living rooms, bathrooms, kitchen, attic, and basements. Pack away things you don’t need. The less stuff there is the more open and larger a home looks and feels.

  • Paint areas where it is scuffed or fading. This includes but is not limited to doors and door frames, walls, and trim.

  • Check faucets and sinks for leaking and slow drains.

  • Have furnace and A/C unit serviced if needed.

  • Check for burnt out bulbs.

  • Fix sticking doors and cabinets.

  • Bathrooms are important in cleanliness. Also caulk if necessary around sinks, bathtubs and toilets. Display your best towels, bath rugs, shower curtains for look.

  • Clean up garage: Homes with a tidy garage and neatly stacked boxes show better than homes whose garages are filled to brim. Also the inspector won’t be able to get access if it is a mess.

  • Prepare for safety: pick up throw rugs, hide extension cords, remove low hanging lights, etc.

  • Put together an information packet on local amenities, utility information, and other helpful information.
